WELLINGTON, New Zealand – A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake damaged buildings, cut power and knocked fleeing residents off their feet on New Zealand's South Island early Saturday, but there were so far no deaths and only two injuries reported.

Panicked residents in their pajamas ran into the streets of the southern city of Christchurch after the pre-dawn quake, residents said. There were reports of some people trapped in damaged buildings — though none appeared to be crushed by rubble — and a few looters broke into some of the damaged shops in the city of 400,000, authorities said.

A state of emergency was declared and army troops were on standby to assist after the quake, which hit 19 miles (30 kilometers) west of Christchurch, according to the state geological agency GNS Science. No tsunami alert was issued.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - For the second time in less than a week, six small earthquakes have been recorded in a single day in central Oklahoma.
The Oklahoma Geological Survey said the six earthquakes on Saturday ranged from preliminary magnitudes of 1.5 to 3.3.

On Wednesday in the same area about 30 miles from Oklahoma City, geologists also recorded six earthquakes that ranged from a preliminary 1.8 magnitude to 3.1. Another quake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.7 was recorded Friday about 10 miles east of the Saturday temblors.

No injuries or damage was reported from any of the earthquakes.

Quakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3 are generally the smallest felt by people.

6.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Fiji

SUVA, Fiji, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific island nation of Fiji region early Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

No tsunami warning has been issued and there were no reports of any major damage.

The quake hit at 4:13 a.m. and was felt in Taveuni, Savusavu and Labasa, the Fijivillage News Web site said.
