Turkey calls for closer ties among Turkic-speaking countries

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Friday that improvement of relations among Turkic-speaking countries would contribute to the region and world peace.

"Today's conference is a solid proof that the relations among the governments of Turkic-speaking countries have turned into an institutionalized body, the Parliamentary Assembly," said Gul.

Apart from Turkey, five countries in the region house considerable Turkic-speaking communities, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan, said the report.

"We are experiencing an historical moment today. I have no doubt that the participants of today's conference share with me the same happiness, excitement and pride," Gul said.

"Although we may have been separated due to the distance during the historical process, we are taking a step to get our brotherly peoples closer to each other, peoples that share the same race, language, culture and common past," Gul said.

"We are now reaping the fruits of our efforts to strengthen relations with our brotherly (Turkic) countries. This reality encourages us further for the future," Gul said.

Transportation of Caspian energy resources to world markets is expected to top the agenda between three leaders. A statement made by the Turkish President's office said that Turkic presidents' meeting would "evaluate relations between three brotherly nations with a forward-thinking vision, seek ways to further expand it and solidify solidarity" between them. It also said that three Turkic leaders would exchange views on regional and international issues.

Istanbul hosts meeting for establishing Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries


Baku. Elbrus Seyfullayev – APA. Meeting in connection with establishing Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries is being held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Azerbaijani Consul General to Turkey Seyyad Aran told APA that the first part of the discussions had finished. Speaker of Turkish Parliament Koksan Toptan made speech in the first part of the meeting and noted the necessity of establishing such an organization. Turkish President Abdullah Gul addressing the event said he supported establishment of Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries and underlined that the realization of the historical wish was of great importance.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday, the Russian prime minister’s press service said.

During the telephone conversation, Putin and Erdogan discussed various aspects of Russian-Turkish trade and economic cooperation and development of the energy dialog, the press service said, adding that the Russian prime minister invited his Turkish counterpart to visit Russia.
